As7 hangs - Click OK when asked if I want to remove invalid sources?
Nov 12th, 2015 at 4:54pm

After creating a project by clicking Arduino sketch the
window appears "Visual Micro - undo the changes Atmel 7.0 has made. By clicking "yes" AS7 doesn't work any longer. I'm confused. I don't know where is the problem. I'm using WIN7/64bit, Arduino 1.6.6, reinstalling AS7 and VM has no effects, I have also deleted the registry entries. Has anyone a solution ?

Hi,

Strange one.

Are you saying that atmel studio will not startup?

Does it start if you click "Run as administrator"?

If not does it start if you edit the shortcut and add /safemode to the end of the command line. Like this..

......atmelstudio.exe" /safemode

If it started with safe mode will it run normally after that without the /safemode switch?

If not then run safemode and uninstall visual micro from "tools>extensions and updates".

Then install Visual Studio 2015 with C++ and Visual Micro. Visual Studio doesn't mess with the projects like the new Atmel Studio does and it doesn't appear to have any issues relating to extensions. It's also free.

Hi,

thank you for your answer,
I tried running as Admin and the /safemode, but it doesn't work. The AT7 starts well, then I can choose what I want to do, open a project, new project, etc. If I choose "new project" with Arduino Sketch with C++ class example, a window opens with the main() function and not setup () and loop() as in Arduino sketches, a window appears with "Visual Micro - undo the changes Atmel 7.0 has made. By clicking "yes" AS7 is working no longer, the program hangs, only with the task manager I can do anything.

Have you any idea? Thank you very much.

Hi,

I will retest the opening and then refresh connected to the dialog over the next few days.

However please see my comment about using Visual Studio 2015 which is free and a more mature product.

Thanks

Hi,

I've just published a new as7 version. Please try it.

There was some relatively new code to detect rename of files in the project. This was to clear the compiler cache but recently the cache has become more intelligent so negates the need for the code.

I don't know why Atmel decided to automatically add code to projects! It's a pain but I hope this fix gives us a reasonable solution.

Thanks

Hi,

I have tried the new AS7 version of visualmicro. It works exactly one time, then there is a window I can click "yes" and the two functions setup () and loop() appear. But when I tried to create a further project, it doesn't work any longer. It's the same problem as yesterday.
I prefer AS7 because I need it for progrmming severel ATmegas', I use Arduino IDE only for education with my pupils.

Have you still any idea ? I have tried several PCs with Win7prof/64 bit, Arduino 1.6.6.

Okay thanks for the info. I will try to look at it over the next few days.

How did you create/open your arduino projects that failed?

File>Open>Arduino Project
File>Open>Project
File>New>Arduino Project
File>New>Project
File>Open Text File>Ino

?

... I (woluld like to) create arduino projects
with File >New> Arduino Project  which is the same as clicking
New File from the Start Page as you describe it on your homepage. Have you also the described failure or does the creating of arduino sketches run well with you ?

Thank you very much.

Hi,

Yes all of the options will be okay when it is fixed. I was interested to know which you used simply because the order that Atmel studio does things differs for some commands.

I will be able to look at this over the next few days.

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry for the delay.

I have replicated a crash when the solution explorer is "showing all files"

Can you confirm that if "Show all files" button on the solution explorer bar is OFF the crash does not happen?

Thanks very much

Hi,

It crashes always, I can't confirm that if the "Show all files" button on the solution explorer bar is OFF the crash does not happen. This button is normal OFF. It crashes always.
The AS7 without the VM extension runs perfectly with other Atmegas.
I have also updated AS7 and the video driver, but it is the same old problem that AS7 crashes by clicking "Yes" if I want to remove invald sources in an Arduino sketch.
Have you still any ideas. please ?

Hi,

I found a crash when trying to update AS7's recently used file list. The codes been disabled so hopefully it's okay now.

A new option on the prompt to "remove invalid atmel sources" turns off the prompt but will continue to remove  sources when required. It's less annoying. The same option is a true/false value in "tools>options>visual micro>projects>remove invalid source code"

I have sometimes found that the first time, since opening the ide, that invalid sources are removed can be followed by an apparent hang for approx 10 seconds. There isn't any visual micro code running at the time but I will continue to review it.

Interested to hear how you get on.

Thanks

fyi: As with all properties it can be auto set using section="projects" key="remove invalid source code" see administrators  mass roll out documentation for more info

Hi,

I have tested the new release today with several PCs of my students and everything was working well with WIN7prof and WIN10. It's really better than AS6.2 with the add-in which was very slow.
Thanks very much, also on behalf of my students. Best wishes from Germany.
