I have filed a bug/question with microsoft. 

When i try it I find it only works when "show all files" is selected (see image). 

I will try to automatically switch to "show all files" mode in the next release because this isn't very nice!

Let me know if show all files works for you.

2)

Another problem I have reported is that after toggling with show all files. When switching back to filtered view all of the source links and folders that have been added all appear in the root of the project. They appear to "corrupt" the view. If you close (and save) the project then re-open it all the sources are in the correct location. Does this also happen for you?

1) Yes you are right, VS2017 do not hang when "Show all files" is selected. And yes ordering of files is corrupt in "Solution explorer", when returned back to normal view. After I saved and reopened the project ordering is normal and hidden files are shown.
2) Sorry to say but new version did't solve problems. VS2017 still hangs on "Toggle hidden files" when not selected "Show all files" and still ordering of files is corrupt when return back to normal view.

1) It hangs immediately. Nothing changes in Solution explorer.
2) Yes, when toggling from visible hidden files to hidden "hidden" files all is OK. Hidden files and folder are cleared in Solution explorer and there is no hang. 
3) Yes, it hangs when switching the boards, when previously hidden files are shown and not in "View all files"
