Is it possible to use the AVRISP programme to set fuse etc from within Visual Studio like it is from within Atmel Studio and if so how?

Hi,

Not really, this is a plus of Atmel Studio that it is has native commands that are avr compatible.

Obviously you can use the visual micro programmer options with the AVRISP and design your own programmers that set the fuses etc but this still means an upload at the same time (unless you write your own adapter in c#)

Maybe atmel will produce an extension now that vs is free

OK I read the other article in this folder re using Visual Studio or Atmel Studio.
I have been developing ATtiny programs using Arduino and would like to have more control over the fuse settings etc as provided by the "Device Programming" facility within Atmel Studio.

You also hinted at developing my own adapter in c# to work with Visual Studio 2013, this sounds like an interesting project as I have developed programs in the past using VB and C++ but not to work from inside another program so could you point me in the right direction please.
I suppose I use "C:\Program Files\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.2\atbackend\atprogram.exe" to talk to the AVRISP but which template from the vast selection of C# ones to use?

PS I cant believe Microsoft are giving all this free development away.

Hi,

Yes good news that Microsoft have made vs 2013 for free.

As for programmers the fuse burning and uploading is defined via boards.txt, programmers.txt and platform.txt in each hardware folder. arduinoide/hardware/arduino/...

Visual micro program folder also has Micro Platforms/.. which, for the avr platform, shows how to use atbackend for some additional avrisp mkII native atmel uploads.

The .txt files are all part of the arduino 3rd party build process supported by arduino 1.5+. You can create your own cores of add to the .txt files. If you make them work the way you want then I can probably then tell you how to split them out into your own files so they don;t get overwritten by any future upgrades

You don't communicate with atbackend directly. Instead you simply call atmel atprogram.exe which also has a ? switch for help commands.

You can write a standalone .exe that is passed the arguments defined by platform.txt or programmers.txt. You can also register your exe in the platform/programmers files so that it is called by arduino or vm at the appropriate times.

when visual micro or arduino compile/upload/burn bootloaders etc it simply runs the exe files defined in the config system described above. Normally this is avr-gcc, avrdude.exe etc.

So to be clear we don't ever run the arduino.exe via Vm. All we do is run the toolchain.exe files defined in the config system. So it is quite flexible.
