Title: Post Build Event for OTA in 1707.14.9?
Post by goj immypi on Jul 15th, 2017 at 11:38pm
Greetings-

I followed the instructions on setting up the ESP8266 for OTA programming using the Arduino IDE: https://randomnerdtutorials.com/esp8266-ota-updates-with-arduino-ide-over-the-air/

However I'd really prefer to program with VisualMicro in VisualStudio. I tried to add a "Post Build Event" to call the python script that sends OTA code to the ESP8266. I can do this successfully from a DOS prompt, however it seems nothing happens in VisualStudio at build time. Its like the setting is just ignored: no error, no additional output. I was wondering if the Build Events are implemented for a VisualMicro project?

I saw some older posts that build events were not supported, however this more recent page indicates they are: http://www.visualmicro.com/post/2017/03/20/Arduino-Custom-Build-Events.aspx

I am using VisualMicro 1707.14.9 installed just today. VisualStudio is:

Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise 2017
Version 15.2 (26430.15) Release
VisualStudio.15.Release/15.2.0+26430.15
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 4.7.02046

I have more details in my blog post here: https://gojimmypi.blogspot.com/2017/07/esp8266-ota-water-pressure-flow-monitor.html

Thanks.

p.s. the forum search returns nothing for "build events" (without quotes)

Hi

The forum is for issues the main site for docs.

Visual micro will do the ota. Follow the arduino ide setup guide and select your ip address from the list or add an ip address manually and add a board.txt to the project with the port, auth, password etc.

AHA! Thanks so much for your prompt reply! It works! :)

I did not notice that the dropdown for serial port allowed text to be typed there. Good that there's note about pressing ENTER, too.

That's really a quite cool feature.  8-)
