Hi both

In the previous forum thread the user report the 1st serial monitor of the day opened but did not connect

In the recent report from Acuario we see an error on the screen.

Can you confirm if you had the error initially or of the problem has progressed from no connection to an on-screen error?

Can I also see a full ide screen shot so I can see what is open in the IDE when the error is on screen

Thanks

Hi,
in my case, when I upgraded to the automatic upgrade version then serial monitor stopped working. I can't tell you the previous version I was using, probably a month or so ago.

The monitor screen appeared, seemed to connect but nothing on the output (no connected or disconnected message), the connect button worked. I did a loopback test (rx-tx) and data was being passed but nothing on the screen. The logging correctly showed what I sent.

The following suggested upgrade from the forum was the same.

The latest upgrade gives the error shown in the first post.

I open VS from the start..etc menu, it opens with a list of projects. I select my project, it opens and goes through the process of loading libraries etc. and the output screen says using overrides from c:\..etc..\board.txt

I change the serial monitor to use COM3, click on the icon to open the monitor and the error window shows.

Thanks for the info. Can you please close the IDE, then open it and select the COM3 port. Then open the serial monitor without a project. Does this show an error?

It does the same without any open project. If I click OK button to close the dialog VS2019 closes completely.

I'm running on 1907.5.3.

Please use this version which has better reporting when the serial window opens.

Thanks

ok, it now doesn't fail when opening the monitor. It has reverted back to a monitor that displays nothing, with a loopback test tx/rx flash, log shows what is sent but nothing in the monitor screen.

With 1907.5.7 it behaves as before. Port is actually open but nothing is displayed on monitor.
External terminal emulator shows port is busy when VS is connected and works normally after closing Serial Monitor connection.

Thanks we are trying to reproduce. When the monitor is blank but working is is possible to select/highlight the area where the serial should appear? Is this an issue with white text on white background? Silly question but good to rule this out seeing themes are quite new.

I checked at 9600 and 115200 and both the same. I also tried changing fonts, the same. Also right click and select all is greyed out (so nothing to select).

I can't remember if previously it was possible to type in the output window (as it should be read only I guess) but now it is possible. What is typed is not sent to the serial port or recorded in the log (only what is typed in the input box, which is correct).

Thanks, no you can't type into the monitor, I just needed to know it was empty without text of same color as background.

If you open the platform explorer before a serial monitor does the monitor then work correctly?

Do you mean the project?
I've tried:
1. Open VS, open serial monitor from vMicro menu - no display
2. Open VS, open project (from last project list), open serial monitor - no display

Sorry replied to the wrong thread previously.

Version 1907.6.3 includes one change that will help us get to the issue. The issue might not be resolved but it illuminates one potential cause.

Also, if not already confirmed. Please confirm if using direct usb to pc or via usb hub.

In my case it is connected directly to PC. With 1907.6.3 serial monitor works fine.

We managed to reproduce, I think this is resolved now. Sorry for the delay. This release should resolve but there will be another release where we try to address the original cause which is a timing issue when opening the tool window v's the tool window frame being created.
