Which version of Visual Studio..?

Hello.

I'd like to blow the cash on a new version of Visual Studio that's fully supported by Visual Micro. I already have versions 6, 2008, and 2012, all Professional. VM installed ok from the "store" into VS 2012, but it doesn't seem to be working correctly and constantly prompts me to upgrade.

I wasn't sure if/which versions that Microsoft might be moving to subscription-only. I don't like the idea of these, and I'd like to get a full retail locally-installed version with a DVD. Can anyone suggest which version I should get..? I see many versions on Ebay, so I have a wide variety to choose from.

Thanks.

Hi

Visual Studio 2019 is probably the best because Microsoft have been working hard on it. The community version if free for most private users and also for commercial open source projects.

Are you using the free version of Visual Micro?

Thanks

Currently, yes the free version of VM, the one installed through the VS "store". But I do want to upgrade to the full version. It's pretty nifty.

Ok, so the current paid version of VM only works as far back as VS 2017..?

Yes, Microsoft introduced breaking changes for 2017/2019 and also the Visual Studio GDB debug tools are only in 2017 onwards.

Ok. Hmmm...I see a bunch of VS 2017 on Ebay, some of them the Enterprise version, and not bad price too. *ponders*

Anyone happen to know if 2017 works on Windows 7..? All my machines but employer laptop are still that. I can't stand the new versions; too much junk.

One the main changes for vs2017 onwards is to allow a more basic faster ide with granular control over what is installed.

If you install VS2019 community or preview then you could try them. VS2017 would be discontinued more quickly than 2019 so if there is little price difference I would certainly try 2019.

That free 2019 version sounds fishy to me. Is something missing, or is it mostly the full version..? What are the rules that make it free..? Does Microsoft claim rights to any code developed in it or something sneaky like that, like those genetic testing companies own your genes..?

It's not like that. They openly offer Visual Studio Community Edition. It's not a cut down version, it doesn't have some of the larger team tools and a few other bits that you probably don't use. No one has any claim over your code or IP rights and there isn't any stealth submission of your code in the background.

I would feel that getting it off ebay would be more of a concern. Personally I use an MSDN subscription but that is because I work with it for a closed source commercial project.

If you are using an older version of Visual Studio then surely you already made a decision about using Visual Studio some time ago. What prompts the concern now?

Ok, sounds real then. Does it at least comes with the SQL connection bits and/or SQL Server Express or some such thing..? I would definitely use those (not for Arduino tho obviously)...
