Hi,

what is the actual license of VisualMicro? On the CodePlex page I saw a LPGL but no source Smiley

I really like OpenSource but I also definitely want that you get enough money to continue the project (I know what I'm talking about Sad )!

Would like to hear if you plan to follow a closed source approach or if there are plans to open up for community development.

Thanks

Jürgen

Hello,

Good questions.

Well, I can tell you from a few years of experience that if peopl do not have to pay and have a donation option 40,000 people will take the free version and 10 will pay something.

So I am waiting for codeplex to switch the project to GIT, then I intend for all of the extensions such as debugger open source visualizations to be served by codeplex. This will leave the basic plugin and core debugger as closed source.

You will find the current (freeware) license on this web site but it is open for discussion.

The costs and amount of support required to maintain the plugin for such a broad rage of users has been huge so everyone would benefit if we could hire some pro help.

I am keen to hear all thoughts, but please bear in mind the experiences so far.

In terms of people paying $14, you would not believe the lengths people will go to in terms of email communication in an attempt to avoid the payment Smiley I find it quite amusing, luckily I have a day job  Cool

ps: Intentions (not commitments)

We want to be able to do this job properly.

We will always be happy to give free licenses to people who deserve or need.

If a small but regular flow of payments are received then we will be happy to provide upgrades for free for paid users for as long as the software is  produced.

We like a low price and high volume price model.

We want this tool to be used by as many people as possible.

We don't really know what else to do, support and question volume is growing as is the base of users, all suggestions are welcome. The commitment at the moment is 2 years of updates.

Thanks for the reply. I understand very well...

Just some more remarks:

1) it would be nice, if you could provide PDF invoices for the license; I always have fights with my financial administration if they only get a PayPal email (well I'm in Germany) Wink

2) I don't know if VisualMicro is used a lot by commercial users. But you could add some "support plan" or something and increase the price for commercial users. I would not mind if the price was higher...

3) You could think of also offering a package with an appropriate license and source-code for a higher price. Usually I like to have the source of my tools available.

Hi,

Thanks for buying a license and for your support.

Yes there is a "commercial use" option in the list but I agree some more options would be better and the options should be more obvious.

We will try to include a pdf invoice with the license key, that is a good idea. In the meantime maybe print the paypal email to the pdf virtual printer to have a pdf for accounts?

I hope that a small income from the current system can provide the funds to implement better user documentation/help systems and also to document the sources. This will certainly be a step towards being able to support people who have the source.

Thanks again!!
