Atmel installs MS VS2010 Shell (Isolated), so there is no start/all programs file or folder for me to access.
Also, I find my PC is using v4.5 of MS.net.

Okay well you must also have .net3.5 installed because Visual Micro uses it in places. The installer also uses it so it must be installed. It is worth checking it is up to date with windows update.

Can you please see if your windows control panel event log is working?

Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.‌  Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

This is not off-topic but split into a separate thread for the user because the problem is likely to be different

G'day, again.
.NET3.5 is lurking in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5 & C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v3.5.
Re: updates. They run automatically, so I don't look at them (very often). I found some vs2010 security updates, .NET Framework 4.5.1 for Feb this year, and repeated failures of IE11 installation beginning Nov/2013. Have not idea if it's important, but the last bit of the IE11_main.log where the install begins to fail is:

00:08.253: ERROR:   Error enumerating Hotfixes. Query string: 'Select HotFixID from Win32_QuickFixEngineering WHERE HotFixID="KB2729094"'  Error: 0x80041013 (2147749907).

Interesting. That is the same sort of problem that Visual Micro is encountering and is a great log to post on microsoft connect. Your previous post on microsoft connect mentioned programs they do not know about so might not get a reply.

However your log above is clean and relates purely to their own software. I think if they can fix that we are hopefully sorted.

Well, one for me, none for us.
Successfully, downloaded,  installed, restarted IE11 directly from their website vice via update route.
IE11_main.log shows same error, but install plowed on and completed. And no Windows Updates now needed. One for me.
But: 6.1 still shows no change; provider load failure. None for us.
Do I need to uninstall, reinstall 6.1 &/or your Arduino plugin?

No re-installing atmel or visual micro will make no difference.

The wmi stuff is only used in a couple of places. There is a new release due over the next week we should be able to put in some workarounds and better trace info.

You could try one thing just to help isolate the issue. In the following link you see how to switch off 3 visual micro options. Please do this and restart atmel. Thanks

I found this suggestion for rebuilding a corrupted windows 7 wmi database

Open a cmd prompt and run this if you can

winmgmt /standalonehost
winmgmt /resetrepository

and here is the solution from Microsoft

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/8ed26d46-9994-4052-a307...

or

spiceworks have also published a fix

Thanks, I'll add some diagnostic messages so we don't have to guess anymore. New release over the next couple of days, hopefully tomorrow.

I will post when it is ready.

When we get it working you have certainly earned a free debugger or three  Smiley

Hello,

What is the title of the dialog that appears when you see "Provider load failure"?

If you have time to run procman.exe download from the windows site http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx. ;

It's best to make procman start tracing immediately before you click okay to cause the "provider load failure" to appear. I think it will show us what is mis-configured but if you are bored already don't bother  Smiley

Thanks

pps: You can switch on atmel studio logging by adding /log and a path/filename to your atmel studio short cut. It might yield something. I've been looking at the wmi code in Visual Micro, it's well protected from failure so either the atmel log or the log in the next version of vm might help.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.1\atmelstudio.exe" /log d:\utils\as61.log

ProcMon that I mentioned earlier will also be useful if the problem continues but I could really do with knowing the title of the error box that appears and if there is any other text than "provider load failure?

thanks

How do I get a .rtf file containing process load screen and a Logfile.pml of the event to you?
Haven't got around to switching on atmel studio logging, yet.

I kinda missed the mark here. I have three files saved on my computer -- two logs and the load failure window. I don't know how to get them in this reply to get them to you. The logs are too verbose to just paste their contents in here. And copy and paste the file doesn't work.

Great. Sorry forgot to give you my email address info [at] visualmicro.com

I've been through and added a whole bunch of extra trace messages when visual micro starts along with better detection of external problems. Nothing gets away without a decent trace message at start-up.

The trace is switched on in "tools>options>visual micro>user interface trace". Might as well switch it on in the current release. Interested to know if it reports anything all when the provider load error appears.

The trace shows in the Micro System Trace output window/pane

Would you also please send the AS6.addin file from the visual micro folder.

Thanks

E-mail sent with attachments.
Trace on 6.1 startup:

CreateCommandBarItemsPerm      Begin AddinVer=1.1401.26
Permanent Items Setup Requested       - Exiting setup because some controls already exist
CreateCommandBarItemsPerm      End

No additional report on provider load error.

Oh why oh why oh why didn't I ask to confirm the full error message earlier. The provider load failure is reported from an exception but the other ext shows Visual Micro knows about it. It's the area I extended yesterday.

Quote:
There was an error loading the Arduino addin. Please report this to http://www.visualmicro.com

Okay now I now exactly where we are.

This does mean that either the WMI database has a problem or that Atmel Studio has a bug. In both cases the version of Visual Micro I will release later today will report correctly the problem but hopefully will continue to start-up properly. Even with the problem basic edit, compile upload etc should work fine. Any windows WMI problems are also now ignored and the system auto switches to use different, slightly less informative, settings.

Thanks for the detailed info. I'll make the new beta because it will report better, then look through the other files you sent.

I forgot to ask. Now that the provider load failure does not appear. In the tools>options>visual micro>application locations dialog do you still see no apps such as Arduino 1.0.x in the drop down combo box?
