Unable to Install/Work
Mar 17th, 2014 at 4:30pm
Print Post
Just a noob, lost in the woods. Have installed 6.2, closed, then installed 1403.08. No prompts for IDE location. Only greyed out sketch in File New and Open. No info in Arduino toolbar. Visual micro shows in tools/options, but blank pull down. Had same problems with 6.1. Was hoping 6.2 & 1403.08 would get me there.
Please help!

Hi,

It sounds like you have an old version of Visual Micro installed and the upgrade has not been able to replace some files or maybe Visual Micro is installed in more than one location. It should be easily fixed.

Ensure Atmel Studio Ide is closed.

Please use "add or remove programs" from control panel then un-install "Visual Micro for Arduino"

Then run the install as normal.

Does this fix the problem?

Thanks

Same result, nothing changed. Uninstalled from control panel, then installed. No luck.

Thanks for the update.

If you click the locations in "tools>options>visual micro>application locations" a dialog should open?

In the dialog you should see a list of ide apps such as arduino 1.0.x and arduino 1.5.x

Can you see these apps?

No probs sorry it has been a pain. This sounds like some simple .txt files that are installed with Visual Micro are missing. I suspect a virus checker or permissions issue but the microsoft msi installer has a mind of its own sometimes.

Please download (save as) the Visual Micro installer. Then run and click "Remove" then run it again by right clicking and selecting "Run As Administrator" and it should install okay.

Thanks

Same result--no change. Right-click shows no Run as Admin, although my other programs do. In properties/compatibility/privilege level Run as Admin is greyed out. Also, in properties/general under attribute there is an unblock box. Unblocking had no effect. Turning my UAC off eliminated the unblock box, but still the same result. I do uninstall before each try. And in c:\program files (x86)\Visual Micro\Visual Micro for Arduino\Micro Platforms there is application.txt and in arduino15x\hardware\avr there is platform.txt and programers.atmel.txt, if this helps.

When you save to is important to some versions of windows. Saving to a more private place such as documents should cause the run as admin to appear.

However you are right you have some of the .txt files so the install is probably ok.

Do you have "Micro Platforms\applications.txt"?
What version is displayed in tools>options>visual micro>version>version?
Does the path/file shown in tools>options>visual micro>version>assembly exist and is it a parent to the .txt files?
Does tools>addin manager>visual micro have the first two checkboxes ticked?
Does running atmel studio as administrator once have any effect?

Thanks

Same result, no change. Appreciate all the help and effort.

Do you have "Micro Platforms\applications.txt"? YES
What version is displayed in tools>options>visual micro>version>version? 1.1403.08
Does the path/file shown in tools>options>visual micro>version>assembly exist and is it a parent to the .txt files? C:\Program Files (x86)\Visual Micro\Visual Micro for Arduino\Visual.Micro.AS6.dll exists; I don' know what a parent to the .txt is unless it's this Visual.Micro.Visual.Studio.Arduino.AS6.AddIn.
Does tools>addin manager>visual micro have the first two checkboxes ticked? YES, command unchecked
Does running atmel studio as administrator once have any effect? NO

Must be the virus checker preventing us from loading or seeing the .txt files. Do you see anything in the log?

If you don't see anything obvious then please uninstall visual micro and install the current release to see if it works in as6.1.

It's here https://visualmicro.codeplex.com/ or in the atmel gallery.

Thanks very much for this effort

Uninstalled then downloaded and installed 1.1401.26 and ran 6.1. Same result, although there was a brief flash of a message about locating the Arduino IDE (I think).
But still blank in the pull-down.

Please open regedit and rename or remove the "HKCU\Software\Visual Micro" registry key then re-start atmel

I assume you have re-started your pc since you had these issues?

Thanks

No progress. With Revo Uninstaller (a deep uninstall), I removed 6.2, 6.1 & Visual Micro, emptied recycle bin, renamed reg key and restarted. Installed 6.1 (not 6.2), opened and it's OK. Closed. Installed 1.1401.26. Opened 6.1. No change. Blank pull-down, greyed-out File new/open sketch, no info in toolbar pull-downs. Removed and reinstalled VM. Same result.

Hi GKinAZ,

did you try installing with Avast disabled ? Antivirus sometimes play nasty tricks to installers.

It's really unfortunate you can't get VisualMicro to work, you will love it quite a lot.

Don't know if this helps, but I enable VM trace in 6.1 and got the following:
CreateCommandBarItemsPerm      Begin AddinVer=1.1401.26
Permanent Items Setup Requested       - Exiting setup because some controls already exist
CreateCommandBarItemsPerm      End

What happens if you click "tools>visual micro>reset user interface"

Can you please open atmel studio as administrator and then switch the sheckboxes off in "tools>addin manager>visual micro" then click Ok and close the dialog. Then open tools>addin manager again and switch the checkboxes back on. Do you see an error message?

Okay this means we can't use some standard .net code to access the wmi database on your machine

Try creating a .net c# or vb app to test the problem.

Add in a Reference to "System.Management"

Then this code (c#)

Code
Select All
System.Management.ManagementObjectSearcher searcher = new System.Management.ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT Capacity FROM Win32_PhysicalMemory");
            foreach (System.Management.ManagementObject obj in searcher.Get())
            {;}

I think your windows exe app with this code in it should fail with the same problem.

Thanks

The problem is that your windows is not installed properly. It might fix itself by ensuring all windows updates have been applied. The article above suggests that the breakage was probably a result of installing an early release of .NET3.5 and was fixed in 3.51. What is not clear is if the .net 3.51 update correct the problem.

The cause might be an improperly-registered dynamic-link library (DLL). During installation of the .NET Framework 3.5 (prior to SP1), the DLL named System.Management.Instrumentation.dll is not properly registered.

To perform the registration, run the Regasm.exe tool providing the full path to the DLL as the only argument. The following procedure provides step-by-step directions to properly register System.Management.Instrumentation.dll.

How to Register System.Management.Instrumentation.dll

NOTE: This snippet from the above links talks about the Vs2008 command prompt. You can probably use the command prompt that is installed with Atmel Studio instead but you need to run it with admin rights.

Code
Select All
Click Start, and select All Programs.
Click Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and select Visual Studio Tools.
On operating systems before Windows Vista, click Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt to open a command prompt window. On Windows Vista, right-click Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator to open an elevated command prompt window.
At the command prompt, type "regasm %systemdrive%\program files\reference assemblies\microsoft\framework\v3.5\system.management.instrumentation.dll" and press ENTER.
Check for the message, Types registered successfully.

In all programs I find no Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.
Looking in C:\Program Files (x86) I find 'Microsoft Visual Studio' , no tools in it, and 'Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0' with a tools folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\Tools), but no 'Visual Studio Tools'. Nothing in C:\Program Files, Microsoft Silverlight seems to be the closest, if that's important.
Running Windows 7. Is there something missing?

Please look on the start menu not in any folders. If you have atmel or vs 2010 installed then hopefully you will see a command prompt option in the respective application group on the start menu?

If not then please open a log with the microsoftconnect.com web site and ask them how you can fix a wmi provider load failure on your version of windows.

Sorry it is a pain but it's a windows issue and I don't run the free versions of VS so I have a command prompt under my Visual Studio menu.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. In start, all programs, found no Visual Studios. Then exploring in the program and program(x86) files found, etc.

However, if I'm following this, at the command prompt under start, all programs, Atmel, I entered the regasm text and got:

C:\Users\George\Documents>regasm %systemdrive%\program files\reference assemblie
s\microsoft\framework\v3.5\system.management.instrumentation.dll
'regasm' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Did I do this correctly?

Registered in microsoftconnect and posed the question.
To be continued...
And, as you can probably tell, I'm in the no-mans-land part of my knowledge base.

Knowing Microsoft you probably have to change to the windows\system32 directory and run the command from there. And replace %systemdrive% with c:\

Look forward to hearing their response!

Discovered how to change directories and...

'regasm' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

You can't have a space before regasm and it is only a single backslash after c:

If this is the correct way:

C:\Windows\System32>regasm "c:\\program files\reference assemblies\microsoft\fra

'regasm' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

Googling and looking at windows files it looks like it will be this.

Code
Select All
"c:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\regasm"  "c:\program files\reference assemblies\microsoft\framework\v3.5\system.management.instrumentation.dll"

By the way, maye sure you do not have c:\\. It is only one back slash in these paths

There seems to be progress:

C:\Windows\System32>"c:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\regasm"  "c:\
program files\reference assemblies\microsoft\framework\v3.5\system.management.in
strumentation.dll"

Opening 6.1 gives same (blank) result. Do I need to do something else, e.g. restart?

Yes re-start pc, if that doesn't sort it then run atmel as admin and untick visual micro in "tools>addin manager", then open addin manager and re-tick.

Same error?

Atmel installs MS VS2010 Shell (Isolated), so there is no start/all programs file or folder for me to access.
Also, I find my PC is using v4.5 of MS.net.

Okay well you must also have .net3.5 installed because Visual Micro uses it in places. The installer also uses it so it must be installed. It is worth checking it is up to date with windows update.

Can you please see if your windows control panel event log is working?

Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.‌  Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

G'day, again.
.NET3.5 is lurking in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5 & C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v3.5.
Re: updates. They run automatically, so I don't look at them (very often). I found some vs2010 security updates, .NET Framework 4.5.1 for Feb this year, and repeated failures of IE11 installation beginning Nov/2013. Have not idea if it's important, but the last bit of the IE11_main.log where the install begins to fail is:

Interesting. That is the same sort of problem that Visual Micro is encountering and is a great log to post on microsoft connect. Your previous post on microsoft connect mentioned programs they do not know about so might not get a reply.

However your log above is clean and relates purely to their own software. I think if they can fix that we are hopefully sorted.

Well, one for me, none for us.
Successfully, downloaded,  installed, restarted IE11 directly from their website vice via update route.
IE11_main.log shows same error, but install plowed on and completed. And no Windows Updates now needed. One for me.
But: 6.1 still shows no change; provider load failure. None for us.
Do I need to uninstall, reinstall 6.1 &/or your Arduino plugin?

No re-installing atmel or visual micro will make no difference.

The wmi stuff is only used in a couple of places. There is a new release due over the next week we should be able to put in some workarounds and better trace info.

You could try one thing just to help isolate the issue. In the following link you see how to switch off 3 visual micro options. Please do this and restart atmel. Thanks

I found this suggestion for rebuilding a corrupted windows 7 wmi database

Open a cmd prompt and run this if you can

winmgmt /standalonehost
winmgmt /resetrepository

and here is the solution from Microsoft

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/8ed26d46-9994-4052-a307...

or

spiceworks have also published a fix

Thanks, I'll add some diagnostic messages so we don't have to guess anymore. New release over the next couple of days, hopefully tomorrow.

I will post when it is ready.

When we get it working you have certainly earned a free debugger or three  Smiley

Hello,

What is the title of the dialog that appears when you see "Provider load failure"?

If you have time to run procman.exe download from the windows site http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx. ;

It's best to make procman start tracing immediately before you click okay to cause the "provider load failure" to appear. I think it will show us what is mis-configured but if you are bored already don't bother  Smiley

Thanks

pps: You can switch on atmel studio logging by adding /log and a path/filename to your atmel studio short cut. It might yield something. I've been looking at the wmi code in Visual Micro, it's well protected from failure so either the atmel log or the log in the next version of vm might help.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.1\atmelstudio.exe" /log d:\utils\as61.log

ProcMon that I mentioned earlier will also be useful if the problem continues but I could really do with knowing the title of the error box that appears and if there is any other text than "provider load failure?

thanks

How do I get a .rtf file containing process load screen and a Logfile.pml of the event to you?
Haven't got around to switching on atmel studio logging, yet.

I kinda missed the mark here. I have three files saved on my computer -- two logs and the load failure window. I don't know how to get them in this reply to get them to you. The logs are too verbose to just paste their contents in here. And copy and paste the file doesn't work.

Great. Sorry forgot to give you my email address info [at] visualmicro.com

I've been through and added a whole bunch of extra trace messages when visual micro starts along with better detection of external problems. Nothing gets away without a decent trace message at start-up.

The trace is switched on in "tools>options>visual micro>user interface trace". Might as well switch it on in the current release. Interested to know if it reports anything all when the provider load error appears.

The trace shows in the Micro System Trace output window/pane

Would you also please send the AS6.addin file from the visual micro folder.

Thanks

E-mail sent with attachments.
Trace on 6.1 startup:

CreateCommandBarItemsPerm      Begin AddinVer=1.1401.26
Permanent Items Setup Requested       - Exiting setup because some controls already exist
CreateCommandBarItemsPerm      End

No additional report on provider load error.

Oh why oh why oh why didn't I ask to confirm the full error message earlier. The provider load failure is reported from an exception but the other ext shows Visual Micro knows about it. It's the area I extended yesterday.

Quote:
There was an error loading the Arduino addin. Please report this to http://www.visualmicro.com

Okay now I now exactly where we are.

This does mean that either the WMI database has a problem or that Atmel Studio has a bug. In both cases the version of Visual Micro I will release later today will report correctly the problem but hopefully will continue to start-up properly. Even with the problem basic edit, compile upload etc should work fine. Any windows WMI problems are also now ignored and the system auto switches to use different, slightly less informative, settings.

Thanks for the detailed info. I'll make the new beta because it will report better, then look through the other files you sent.

I forgot to ask. Now that the provider load failure does not appear. In the tools>options>visual micro>application locations dialog do you still see no apps such as Arduino 1.0.x in the drop down combo box?

Hi Simon,

Please post in your own thread. You have a config issue by the looks of things. It's quite different to this users report and I will give you different instructions

Thanks no need to remove before updates I was just being extra safe in previous discussions.

Sorry I forgot to post a link to the beta before!

The trace clearly shows your windows wmi database is still corrupt and that I forgot to add a workaround to one area of achiever. There is a new version 1403.25 here with the workaround https://visualmicro.codeplex.com/releases/view/106554

Thanks

Going backwards.
Installed  latest WM module.
On startup AT6.1 gives error window  titled "Microsoft Visual Studio Isolated" with text
"Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application."
Removed AT6.1
Restarted
Cannot install AT6.1. During install twice gives same error window, then completes. Then AT6.1 startup gives same error window.

Sorry to hear that. We can see in the recent visual micro traces that your machine certainly has a corrupted wmi database.

The Visual Studio Shell error is also an indication that there are some problems with your pc and the fact that the Atmel installer can no longer run is again an indication of windows or hardware problems.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

I explained that Visual Micro simply reads the wmi using the standard microsoft api which can be seen in the trace. Windows update has also failed for you previously and still shows an error for the mssql updater (if I recall correctly). Now we see the installer that Atmel uses is failing. The Atmel install is two installs in one. Usb Drivers then Atmel Studio which suggest that the two errors you see are a result of those two installers failing.

I don't know what else to say except that the easiest discussion might be with Microsoft about the windows update wmi error. However, you report that a working AS6.1 suddenly lost a component, unless AS6.1 uses the wmi database, I guess that could possibly be a hard disk failing?

Either way I am here to help if you think I can. Best of luck

Was able to get the Visual Studio Shell reinstalled. And, of course, got all the same messages back.
Thanks for all you effort and pointing me in right direction.

Does that mean you get an error on screen or just the apps list is empty?

If apps list then more diagnostics in this version now that we don't care about wmi errors

Whee!
Installed 1403.26  over 1403.23, pushed past the provider load message and we're in -- thanks to a prodigious effort on
your part.
One thing I picked up, being a Yun user, no access to the Wi-Fi due to the wmi problem. As info, I do have Wi-Fi access to the Yun with Arduino's iDE as well as Eclipse/Arduino.
Looking forward to the Atmel/VisualMicro experience, especially with the debugger.
Thanks again.

Great. Are the provider load errors just in the trace or are you getting on screen dialog warnings?

I know that the wifi is disabled at the same time as the wmi corruption is detected. There will be a new visual micro over the next week which separates these two things.

You will then be able to switch on Network Discovery in the Communication tools>options.

It will have been switched off automatically by Visual Micro due to the wmi problem. I suspect you can not currently switch it back on without loosing your serial ports but you can try it if you want it's easy to switch off again and won't kill your config  Smiley

I have sent you a PM with a link to a 3 machine debugger for all your hard work. I think users with windows wmi issues are going to find a huge benefit from your persistence.

Thanks again

1)
There is a new release in the beta channel. It silently ignores the wmi errors and will automatically start using wmi when it has been repaired.

2)
Network wifi discovery was automatically disabled in the last version and can now be switched back on.

Wifi
"Tools>Options>Visual Micro>Communications>Network Discovery" = True

3)
If you have your www folder and sd card setup for the yun please also try "project>upload www sketch files" which updates the yun web server without needing a network upload.

Thanks

WiFi: fantastic!

Elsewhere: have notice a quirk which I took a quick look for in the forums and didn't find anything. I have a Uno connected to just one of two LCDs. The sketch has libraries for both, the LCD not being used commented out. Both LCDs use the Wire library. This does not build:
Code
Select All
//LCD
/*
//Adafruit RGB LCD Shield
#include <Wire.h> //one must be commented out else cannot build
#include <Adafruit_MCP23017.h>
#include <Adafruit_RGBLCDShield.h>
Adafruit_RGBLCDShield lcd = Adafruit_RGBLCDShield();
*/
//Adafruit I2C backpack
#include <Wire.h>
#include <LiquidCrystal.h>

void setup()
{

  /* add setup code here */

}

void loop()
{

  /* add main program code here */

}

And gives error message:
Code
Select All
Compiling 'canbuild' for 'Arduino Uno'
System.ArgumentException: An item with the same key has already been added.
   at System.ThrowHelper.ThrowArgumentException(ExceptionResource resource)
   at System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2.Insert(TKey key, TValue value, Boolean add)
   at processing.app.MCUTargetPlatform.getImportedLibsOfSketch(List`1 importedSketchHeaders)
   at processing.app.SketchBuilder.preprocess(String buildPath, PdePreprocessor preprocessor)
   at processing.app.SketchBuilder.preprocess(String buildPath)
   at processing.app.SketchBuilder.build(String lbuildPath, Boolean verbose)
   at processing.app.SketchBuilder.build(Boolean verbose)
   at Visual.Micro.Visual.Studio.Arduino.AddInApp.CompileDo(Project oProject, Boolean IsDebugStartCommand)
   at Visual.Micro.Visual.Studio.Arduino.AddInApp.Compile(Project oProject, Boolean IsDebugStartCommand)

Commenting out one of the Wire.h -- doesn't matter which one -- and it builds OK. I.e.:
Code
Select All
//LCD
/*
//Adafruit RGB LCD Shield
//#include <Wire.h> //one must be commented out else cannot build
#include <Adafruit_MCP23017.h>
#include <Adafruit_RGBLCDShield.h>
Adafruit_RGBLCDShield lcd = Adafruit_RGBLCDShield();
*/
//Adafruit I2C backpack
#include <Wire.h>
#include <LiquidCrystal.h>

void setup()
{

  /* add setup code here */

}

void loop()
{

  /* add main program code here */

}

Do not see this issue with Arduino IDE or Eclipse/Arduino.
And thanks for the offer of the debugger (which just incredible) for which I filled and sent the form.

The library management is re-written in the beta so that's well found before the release thanks.

the form is automated so you should receive an email instantly. However I get notified of the requests and I can't see one for you. Please try the form again.

Thanks very much
