hey 

i'm having the same problem Sad

have trayed every thing suggestet in this topic nothing helps Sad

i have trayed reinstalling every thing atmel / visualmicro

can this be becouse off windows 8 ??

Please confirm which version of atmel studio you are using and also confirm what is in tools>options>visual micro>version>version

Hope you don't mind this is split into a new thread. Normally be have one thread per user because problems are often different and it's confusing to ask two sets of questions in a single thread.

Can you please confirm if you have a path to the visual micro program files in tools>options>environment>addin/macro security>locations

and also see if your windows event log is enabled or disabled? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b04gcrR8MU

yes i have a path for the addin i have not put it in there my self but it there Tongue 

i have been traying to figur out what the problem is and what im experincing is that in tools/ is there no option for the visual micro and i can't select the board any where 

i think my problem is totaly the same as the thread you move me from 

but when programming i get function suggestions and arduino command suggestions Tongue

It's a different problem but just as annoying  Smiley the other user has a "provider load failure" when attempting to enable the addin via tools>addin manager.

Do you have a "tools>options>visual micro" option?

EDIT: In "tools>options>visual micro>applications locations", when you attempt to configure the ide locations do you see a dialog with a drop down list of apps such as Arduino 1.0.x, Arduino 1.5.x?

and nothing happens if i only put in the path for my arduino ide install  Sad

Hi Simon,

EDIT: Sorry for the messing about. This has been reported by a couple of other new users. The same Visual Micro and Atmel 6.1 software has run well for months and thousands of users. 

It might be a permissions issue but I have been vague because the problem is within some internal Atmel Studio, Visual Studio or Windows component.

We will get to the bottom of it sometime soon and also why it affects on a few people. It's going to be boring story I am sure. Stay tuned and we will send you a free debugger when it is working for you.

No but thanks for asking. There should be a new release later today that includes some better diagnostics and reporting along with fallback to alternative ways of doing things. So the mystery should be removed.

It's going to be interesting to see what is causing it for the two of you.

In the meantime you can switch on "tools>options>visual micro>user interface>trace" please. After you get the next update better info will appear in the output window (when you start atmel studio). Currently I don't think it will show anything useful.

Great thanks, well for starters this shows you have added a path to the arduino ide. 

So I guess you have configured an Arduino location in Visual Micro? 

Can you please open regedit and delete the registry key called "HK_CURRENT_USER/Software/Visual Micro". Only delete the Visual Micro key which will delete all of the Visual Micro settings. Then re-start the ide.

What happens?

nothing when i open the software it just opens no system trace log ore any thing ...

i still have the visual micro in the tool options

i check the options and saw that system trace was turned off so i turned it on and goth this error

Good. yes it makes sense that the trace was switch off when you removed the reg key.

So do you have a tool bar with a few combo boxes and a big question? If so what is in the first combo box if you drop it down?

if youre 
thinking about the drop down box in there application ide install location menu nop still getting the same trayed running as admin and non admin nothing new in there Sad

and i trayed pasting the path to the ide a few times nothing new

my path is this "E:\Program Files (x86)\Arduino"

Hi Simon,

Sorry I am not sure why the system will not load the .txt files it reads the config from. The same software has worked fine for many thousands of people so it's a mystery. We will add more trace info to the loading of the .txt config files to determine what is wrong. 

Can you please confirm the type of disk (normal, network, cloud) that is mapped to your E:\ please

The trace has shown that the other user you noted has a problem with their windows wmi database. 

The problem with your install, I missed it earlier when you posted the trace, is that Visual Micro can't create any menus or tool bar items. It's standard stuff and is managed by Microsoft Visual Studio which Atmel Studio is built with.

The Visual Studio system shares the command bar and menu system with other Microsoft components such as ms office. So I should ask if you have performed all windows updates and also what is the history of Ms Office on your pc?

Hey I think I have found out what is happening. The trace above with the menu command failures is simply due to the fact you entered the arduino location for an non-existent ide (due to your apps list being empty)

I was adding more trace messages for why on earth the applications are not showing and force replicated the problem. 

We need to ensure that the Visual Micro installer has been able to install a text file called applications.txt (which is located in the "Micro Platforms" below the Visual Micro program files folder. You can see the location of this folder in "tools>options>visual micro>version>assembly locations")

Do you have this file? If you do is the file size zero bytes?

hey just ran the patch and launched atmel 

getting a promt to enter activation key (first time i see this) then i x the ( i have read ....) and click free trail and getting the following error

" Error: the system cannot find he path specified. (exception from HRESULT:0x90070003"

then i get a popup to enter the arduino ide location when i enter that i get a new popup with the title

now i can see the arduino tab in tools and i can choose board and arduino version from top toolbare Tongue



i also just tested uploading a sketch with also works Tongue

Okay well that's a bit better but we are certainly looking at a corrupted windows installation although not in critical areas. 

We still need some more trace messages but it would be good if you re-start the ide and then post the trace now that the system has automatically disabled usage of the wmi database.

I notice from the trace that it can not add Boards to the Tools>Visual Micro>Boards menu? Can you confirm the menu is empty?

That's two users in a week with a corrupted wmi database. What a waste of time for everyone. I can't believe that microsoft have a flaky database after so many years of building operating systems!

The trace messages and fall back code we have added as a workaround will surely be useful to others so thanks very much for sticking with it.

Yes I noticed the forum is sometimes slow but right now it's working well for me. 

It's either a browser cache or php problem or my isp has a dodgy server in their farm.

New web site coming shortly!
