USB serial Converter going bananas

Hi,

I run AtmelStudio 6.2.1153 and VisualMicro 1.1503.18.

Sometimes no USB Serial Port works. I need to reboot the computer for the to work. I use FTDI Basic from SparkFun. Whatever the FTDI Basic I connect, no serial port is added to the computer.

I checked in the Manage Hardware section of Manage Computer when I have the issue and find a "USB Serial Converter" that does not work (the yellow sign beside):
  • I can't deactivate and reactivate the driver
  • install a newer version of the driver
  • can't Shutdown the computer (it does not complete)
The only way to get rid of this is to force close the computer with the Power switch and reboot  Shocked.

Did you experienced that, and do you have a way to repair the situation without rebooting ?

Thanks

No never get that but I use ftdi cables so maybe not the same.

Did you check your drivers are up to date?

You could try switching off usb name resolution and network polling that might at least have visual micro doing less with the port.

Tools>options>communications>  friendly port names, ports list and network discovery

Did you read anything on the sparkfun site in the notes of the product page

This might not be relevant but a lot of similar moans here https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/10270

Hi Tim,

I right clicked on it in Manage Hardware, ask to find a driver on Internet, but was told I have the newest.

Just did, but visually I can't see any difference. As before, the dropdown list still display COMxx. I will see how it goes today.

Thanks

I think the problem is the driver or the cables. Please speak with sparkfun to determine the solution.

Thanks

I will do.

I wonder what changes turning on Friendly port names ? What additional information is displayed ? When it was on, I didn't have any additional information.

Thanks

When you are using generic usb/serial drivers they do not show or provide any useful info so you just see COMx

When using native usb and modern boards, such as Uno, then each board/driver does provide the name of the board. This shows to the right of the com port names.

See the image half way down the visual micro home page of the ports and port names

Thanks
