It's a good question. I have thought about it quite a lot but here is some info to consider.

1) The checkbox ON signifies that the terminal should be cleared each time the serial connects not just when the button is clicked.

2) If already ON, then two clicks clears immediately.

3) You can delete the text in the monitor manually using the key board or context menu.

So as you can see there are a few combinations which might be better served by a checkbox and a button but screen space is in short supply.
