Breakpoint does not work

Hello,
After a few hours trying to follow debug tutorials, I can not get the sketch to STOP at a breakpoint.  I'm sure it is something stupid, but I cant figure it out.  I had this working a month ago...

The Automatic Debug (Release/Debug) option is grayed out.

I'm pretty sure I set the breakpoint correctly.  For some reason, I cant find the place to Enable Breakpoints.

The tutorials context menus are somewhat different from mine.

I have tried to attache a few print screens, but i get file is too large...

Please help.

Thanks,

Dieter

Hi,

If automatic debug is grayed out then the debugger license isn't active.

Maybe the 45 day trial had started previously or maybe you changed windows user name or upgraded windows. These things can cause the license to need to be registered again.

You should also see a menu item "vMicro>try, buy activate" and at the start of each compile it should say "using the free version of visual micro" and it will no longer say "Compiling debug version of project xyz"

You can use the try,buy activate screen to activate your licence key or do it via "tools>options>visual micro>license key"

If you get an error attempting to activate saying the "forbidden" key uses too many times then email your key to info[at]visualmicro.com and request a reset.

I'm running the vMicro Free version. This is what I see before the compile:
Visual Micro free version. PLEASE HELP by posting on social media or purchasing http://www.visualmicro.com
Free licences given for popular blogs, posts or reviews of Visual Micro
To apply email link(s) to mailto://blogs@visualmicro.com. (Your personal details will be kept private)
Your feedback about which features should be in this free version is of value http://www.visualmicro.com/forums
This build would have been faster using the full paid version.

Compiling 'Blink' for 'Arduino Due (Programming Port)'
Program size: 21,892 bytes (used 4% of a 524,288 byte maximum) (0.41 secs)

----

The only option I see on the vMicro menu list, is "Buy Pro".  So do i have to buy something to get debug going?  how much is it?  I'm a casual experimenter...

Is there some what to try the trail version?  After I installed this, I did not really have a chance to experiment with the debugger.

Is there a way to proof that my problem is that my license has expired?  Is there a way to display the version I have?

Hi,

Quote:
I'm running the vMicro Free version.

The debugger is part of the paid/pro version. It's only $25.

You can read more here

http://www.visualmicro.com/

The version is displayed in Tools>Extensions & Updates>Arduino Ide for Visual Studio.

+ A screen should appear every 45 days showing what is in the pro version and asking you if you want to buy.

Thanks

I don't mind paying for something I will use often.
But for occasional/learning usage, no.
I will uninstall VS and vMicro.

Okay sorry to hear that. The plugin is free it is only the debugger and a few extra features that are not.

Most people are casual users so you are no different. Unfortunately for me I can't be casual about writing the software or running the web site. It takes an enormous amount of effort and time yet most users use for free.

I see you have had some help from me and made good use of the forum. I was happy to help and contribute towards your hobby in that way.

You posted earlier a snippet from visual micro that explained that people who contribute with blogs or in other way can earn free licences. I am sorry you weren't able to support or contribute in any way and would have enjoyed, as always, giving a free license.

To be honest with so much being given for free it is nice when people contribute or support the product without expecting something in return. Just giving because they appreciate the huge effort.

I have tried to keep the price very low to that it is easy for people to support the project. It seems to me that most people regularly spend $25 on something that requires a lot less effort to produce than Visual Micro.

Finally I should say that I was happy to help you understand the difference between your older Arduino 328p boards and your new Due in your earlier posts. Even though the questions should have been asked to Arduino who is the company that profited from your hardware purchase. I hope you can one day ask yourself what pays my bills, why I create Visual Micro and who pays for the time it takes to answer these questions?

I totally understand what you are saying, and appreciated your help.  But for what I need, the Arduino IDE will work fine.

I wanted to "play" around with debugging, but I never got a chance due to other projects.

Maybe at some later date, I will invest the $25...

Makes sense. If you don't need intellisense, goto definition, code helpers and all the other free stuff then might as well use the Arduino IDE  Smiley

Best of luck
