Board Selection Issue

I have an Arduino Pro Mini 328 3.3V board.
If I upload a basic sketch via the Arduino IDE, it works without issue.
If I upload the same sketch via VM it produces garbage in the serial monitor.
If I change the board choice in VM to "Arduino Pro or Pro Mini w/ ATmega 328 5V" (instead of the 3.3V version) then the sketch works correctly and produces the expected output in the serial monitor.
