Time of writing log files

I notice that when logging is enabled in the serial monitor the log is only written when the serial monitor is disconnected from the device.

Today I had a case where visual studio crashed (it seems to do that when there is a break in internet connectivity - very annoying but not due to VM) so my log I had running didn't get written.. and typically this happened just after the bit of my logging that I wanted had happened so I lost my logging data.

Is it possible to change the behavior so logging is written out to the log file when it is received?
