ESP32 upload fails with A fatal error occurred: Failed to connect to ESP32: Timed out waiting for pa

I recently started working with ESP32, but am having problems with 'blink' program.  I can upload fine as long as nothing is connected to GPIO pins.  Otherwise I get the dreaded

A fatal error occurred: Failed to connect to ESP32: Timed out waiting for packet header

message.  I have googled this and found numerous 'solutions', none of which worked for me. I did find there might be an issue with compile options for the ESP32 Wrover module, so I looked in vMicro options for this.

I reduced upload speed to 115200, but this had no effect.  I'm not sure what the other options relate to, so I'm a bit reluctant to start changing them.  Has anyone else gotten this module upload reliably?

TIA,

Frank

Well, for some reason this is now working fine. I can upload programs to the ESP32 even with the same circuit connection as before (a 240-Ohm resistor and an LED in series).

No clue what I did (or didn't) do to make this work, other than the fact that I uploaded several programs with nothing connected, and then discovered it was still working with the LED/resistor circuit connected.

I have a PhD in electrical engineering and I'm stumped by the simplest of projects - Go figure.   Grin
