Visual Micro 26.0708.14

Visual Micro changes — 22–28 October 2026

  • More reliable IntelliSense: Improved refreshes when opening, copying, or moving projects, switching boards, renaming configurations, and changing compiler settings. Toolchain-setting changes are detected without reopening the solution.
  • Better support for newer compilers: Improved C++20 detection and GCC 14/16 compatibility, including standard-library containers, math functions, memory allocation, numeric limits, and extended floating-point types.
  • Improved responsiveness: Reduced repeated IntelliSense processing, graphics-resource usage, and AI Assistance delays with large library collections or slow storage.
  • Expanded build-failure hooks: recipe.hooks.errorbuild.NUMBER.pattern now runs for failures during compilation, linking, and other required build steps.
  • New filesystem-upload completion hooks: recipe.hooks.fsupload.postupload.NUMBER.pattern runs after a successful manual or automatic package-defined filesystem upload. The older SSH web-file publisher is excluded.
  • New overall upload completion hooks: recipe.hooks.deploy.complete.NUMBER.pattern runs after successful firmware upload and any automatic filesystem upload, including its required completion hooks. This includes Teensy uploads. Use it for scripts that must wait for the full upload sequence.
  • Configurable completion scripts: Define the new completion hooks in project board.txt or board-package properties, replacing NUMBER with a sequence such as 10 or 50. Existing post-upload hooks retain their timing.
  • Responsive completion scripts: Upload completion hooks run without freezing Visual Studio. The Serial Monitor waits until they finish before reconnecting.
  • Clearer upload failures: Filesystem-upload and required completion-hook failures mark the overall operation as failed while retaining settings for successfully uploaded firmware. The Serial Monitor stays disconnected after a failed filesystem upload.
  • More reliable consecutive uploads: Improved handling when starting another upload as one finishes, including uploads using an open Serial Monitor.
  • Preserved upload and debugger settings: Failed firmware uploads retain settings from the previous successful upload. Upload Last Build uses the settings associated with that build.
  • Project-specific pin-monitoring limits: Add vm.debug.pins.digital.count and/or vm.debug.pins.analog.count to project-root board.txt. Each accepts 0–256; choose counts supported by your board. Zero disables sampling for that report. Enable the corresponding pin report separately, then rebuild and upload.
  • Cleaner digital pin display: For example, vm.debug.pins.digital.count=49 displays positions 0–48, hiding trailing unused positions. Analog counts independently select channels from 0 through count minus 1. Remove an override to restore the board default, then rebuild and upload.
  • Improved ESP32 pin monitoring: Uses the board core's declared digital pin count where available, avoiding missing higher-numbered pins. Invalid GPIO reads are skipped when a custom count exceeds the available range, while preserving board pin numbering.
  • Better pin-monitor layouts: Corrected rendering with small configured pin counts and very small windows.
  • More robust board-package discovery: Improved handling of manually copied packages and missing, invalid, or unreadable package metadata, including retention of required tool versions.
  • Micro Explorer and window fixes: Corrected dark-theme colours, improved stability when closing Micro Explorer or changing IDE profiles, and improved responsiveness when reopening IDE Locations and New Portable Solution. IDE Locations now opens as a floating window.
  • Custom contributions folder: The contributions folder in IDE Locations is optional and normally left empty. Set it only when using a custom, non-standard contributions location. Validation now prevents selecting the packages subfolder itself; choose its parent folder.
  • More accurate AI support context: Newly opened sketches and active editor projects are recognized more consistently. Context includes previously missing compiler, linker, and upload output to help assistants explain failures. MCP tools no longer return the previous project's context after its solution closes.
