visual studio is telling the addin to setup multiple times. a couple of users have reported this, it's certainly a vs problem but i suspect it is caused by an older version of some visual studio or office tool bar api.

are you using an english or u.s. version of vsual studio? it should work in other languages but i am interested to know.

what is the exact version of visual studio that you are using?

by the way you only need to remove the libraries\.svn

ok, thanks for all the info. i wonder if you need to run visual studio with administrator permissions (checkbox on vs shortcut). 

Visual studio manages when an addin should run first time setup. When visual studio calls the addin to run first time setup you will see this trace message:- 
CreateCommandBarItemsPerm

In your trace we see the CreateCommandBarItemsPerm a number of times. The addin has NO control over when this function is called. 

We also see that everything setup okay from visualmicros point of view because the trace does not show error messages.

So this is why i suggest admin permissions. It appears that your installation of visual studio is unable to save the fact that it has told vm to run setup/install. I have no idea how or where visual studio records this information but I am explaining this in the hope that it gives you some things to try. 

I am keen to help get to the bottom of this annoying problem.

hello thanks for answer.
i run VS2010 as administrator.
However, a note: I uninstalling visual micro , clean de registry and apply the "devenv.exe /resetaddin Visual.Micro.Visual.Studio.Arduino.Helper". After this,  I see that the two menu bars arduino boards & serial communications are still here . Content is empty but they are there... Shocked

i've delete them manualy, they  were not populated...
after reinstall always same problem : one additionnal menu after each VS2010 start...
so no solution for me at this time... Sad

okay then the problem might be we need more trace messages when creating the tool bar drop down lists?

what about the boards and serial ports on the menus? are they there and populated?

hi,

please apply v23 or higher and then do the reset in your step2. if that doesn't fix the problem then please try resetting visual studio.

all resets should be run from the visual studio command tool.

i have replicated the problem in some way. when i install or uninstall a certain vs extension (from codeplex) in 2010, i get an additional set of duplicates. 

It seems that vs can become upset and incorrectly believe that our addin needs to be setup again. In your case vs seems to be in a never ending cycle that each time it starts it has the problem. 

Please also let me know what extensions you installed using vs2010 "tools>extension manager"

I'm having this problem with v27. I don't get the additional toolbar items (I think you've prevented the duplicates being created), but launching VS2010 takes a long time on every startup.
My trace contains:

  • Application Styling Configuration Dialog (Infragistics) - 2 instances or versions, only one is selected. Hm, that sounds suspicious.
  • BuildVersionIncrement - disabled. I've had problems with it in the past

the slowness when you start is vs thinking it has to create it's cached settings system. it does this once after addin or extensions are installed

the bold note shown in the vm trace you sent shows that vs thinks the addins or extensions collection has changed. when this happens it sends a message to all addins

so what we see here is a rather unhappy vs. it doesn't seem to be able to startup and shutdown cleanly.

the ms site has a note about a command to reset visual studio to default. it might help, otherwise i would try disabling those two active addins/extensions to see if this fixes the problem.

maybe also run vs as administrator once, i guess it's possible that vs is unable to update some internal config. just guessing but I only see the delay you mention if vs crashed or I just installed some new addin/extension

I cleared out a couple of other add-ins. Now it's just loading VisualMicro and the VMware one.  I still get the same messages in the vm trace file, but it doesn't sit there trying for ages.
VS2010 now loads at its regular pace + 2 seconds to cache Arduino libraries.  (VS2008 loads so much more quickly.. leaves me wondering which version to use for vm as I need both vs's on my machine anyway).

Yes i know what you mean about the speed difference. I have found that 2010 loads faster if you switch off the start page and close any unused tool windows.

Would you try disabling the vmware addin and re-starting vs twice so see if the messages go? if they do i will install the vmware addin and try it myself.

One other thing would be of interest to reset your visual studio interface to default. I read about a microsoft command that can be run which does the reset. I can't recall what it is called off the top of my head. It's not the visual micro resetaddin that I am talking about it is the Visual Studio reset. Let me know if you can find it easily or would prefer not to run it. I haven't tried it but I do not think it does much harm other than clean itself up.

I have the same problem with loading. It takes forever to get started. I don't have the VM addin. Should there be some other thing to look for maybe?

yes, do you have any other addins or extensions loaded? have you tried a visual studio reset? if toolbox and start page are loading then close them and tick the box not to show the start page. make sure class viewer and any other unused tool windows are closed. it's okay to open these windows when needed but try to avoid them all being open by default. disable all extensions until you get a fast clean system then re-enable one by one testing shutdown and startup until you find the problem.

i've seen the vs 2010 speed problem myself but after tidying up the above in vs it now opens in a few seconds. 

the debug tools will be released over next few weeks then i hope to convert the addin to a vs extension. this might make a big difference. extesions are first class citizens in the vs world and do not use the old vs com interface that addins have to use.

1)
Explained: Moving to a vs extension might help purely because I think vs can be a bit unstable with addins. The addin system uses older OLE interfaces which microsoft seem to be keen to move away from.

2)
I recently found that vm was throwing an unhandled exception during startup. We never see it because vs protects against exceptions and does not show errors. However it is possible this contributes to the problem. I don't really know this for certain but it is fixed in the next release

3)
So far all reports of speed or startup issues have been solved by removing other providers addins or extensions. I have many microsoft extensions loaded in vs which do not cause a problem. It should not be possible for any extension or addin to interfere with visual micro but we have proven that they can.

So in the short term we should remove any unimportant 3rd party extensions and addins and look forward to vm moving to the extension system.
