No way to start new project in VS2013 U1 Prem

Hi,

I have a relatively fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro with VS2013 Premium.  I can't seem to find the option in VS to create a new Arduino Project.  Where is it hiding? I've tried installing and reinstalling, removing etc version 1.1401.26-1 but still no option to create a new project in VS2013.  I've been able to add an existing project to a blank solution but surely that is not the way.  Everything else works fine just can't seem to start one off.

Thanks,
Al

Thanks for the image. I have never seen a version of Visual Studio with a File menu that looks like that. Normally we see "File>Open" with a sub menu below containing "open Project", "Open File" etc. and below that is where Visual Micro puts an "Open Sketch" menu item. I expect Visual Micro fails to create the item because the File>Open menu does not exist. File>Open might be an option in your "Customisation" list via "Tools>Customise".

If not, as long as Visual Micro has loaded correctly there are other ways to open a sketch.

First let's ensure Visual Micro is installed okay and running. I can't see from the image if you have a tool bar with Arduino boards?

Thanks

ps: We will alter Visual Micro to cater for this menu layout in a future version

Opening isn't such an issue but starting from blank is.

I do have the toolbar, I've used VisualMicro a few months back on 2012 and in VS2013 it's working as expected apart from the missing option to start a new project/sketch.

In VS 2012 there is an option to install for web development, C# layout etc.  Don't remember there being such a choice for VS2013.

Okay great. I usually pick general layout simply because I switch between c# for windows and c++ for arduino and web development. We should add the "new sketch" option to the file menu if File>Open is missing.

You have lots of options, here are a few ideas

1) You should have a tool bar called "New project"? If so then Visual Micro should have added "New Sketch" as an option.

2) Visual Micro creates a macro for each command. So you can use the standard Visual Studio "Customise" option to add your own file menu. If you get into the Visual Studio customisation system all commands created by addins are easily identifiable in their own "Addins" group. So the Visual.Micro ones should be easy to spot. Can't say the macro names are perfect Smiley

3) You file new to create a new text file in a new folder. Give the folder and the text file the same name. Then rename the text file to .ino. Close it and then open it as a normal Arduino sketch. That's all a sketch really is.

4) Create a new empty/blank Win32 C++ .exe project using the standard Visual Studio "New Project" wizard. Ensure the name of the project is the same name as the folder that contains it. When the new project opens rename the main.cpp to [sketchname].ino and Visual Micro should kick in and do the Arduino stuff

Hope that helps

Did step 2 - thanks for the pointer.

Brilliant work, I really appreciate the effort you have put into visual micro Smiley

All the best,
Al

Great, thanks for the update and the comments

It is good to see someone make use of the Customisation and Macros.

If you or anyone else adds more than a couple of menu items it is always worth taking a few moments to open tools>options and save your VS settings to a file.

This can sometimes be useful if ever you need to reset VS or Visual Micro. It makes it easy to restore your customisations without setting them up again.
