Error message when trying to install latest update
Aug 8th, 2014 at 4:59pm
Print Post
I downloaded the latest update. When I run ArduinoforAtmel Studio.msi, after selecting the repair option, the installer quickly quits with the  error message
A network error occurred when trying to read Release[1].msi.
I've re-downloaded the file a few times, all with the same result.
The ArduinoForAtmelStudio.msi file is located on my C drive in the documents/downloaded folder, so there should be no network activity going on during the install.
  Running Window 7 , 32 bit.
Thanks

Hi,

It might be a permissions problem. Please try running as administrator. It might also be that you need to copy the msi to somewhere with higher permissions such as mydocuments.

The Microsoft installer has a mind of its own and we will try to dump using it during the next few months!

Right clicking on the MSI file does not give the option to run as administrator, although doing this works on other files ( EXE or shortcuts) that I tried. CTRL-SHIFT + clicking on the .msi file doesn't work properly either,in terms of that error.
I moved the file to both documents\my documents folder as well as trying c:\program files\.
Same in both cases.
The progress bar gets 95% of the way through, when this error is thrown.
No hurry on this- the existing install of VM works OK. While I can't find it now, I was sure I saw where the newest VM version allowed for the JTAGICE3 to be used a programmer from within VM, which would be nice, as I have one of these. (which works from Studio of course).
Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

I found a few articles on the internet about this.

1)
Most suggest copying the msi to C:\Windows\Installer\ then renaming it to something else such as release[1].msi which was shown in your error then running it. It's some sort of historic issue with the installer system.

2)
Another article on the microsoft site was for the same problem but when trying to install/repair sql server 2008. The solution is here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970876/en-us

All I can say is that lots of people have installed it okay so there should be fairly simple solution. Sorry to be so vague.

ICE3

As concerns the ICE3 are you using an avr board? If so when a project is open that is set to an arduino avr board the programmer should show on tools>visual micro>programmers.

I had no luck with 1) above, and can't see the applicability of 2)
re the ICE3: I only use AVR MCUs. The ICE3 did not show up in my current version of VM, but I didn't expect it to, as it doesnt show up under Arduino IDE either. I was only doing the upgrade of VM after I saw (?) that this version did support ICE3. I generally use my AVRISP mk II, but I have two dev. stations, and like to keep a programmer at each station, thus the use of the ICE3.
If i recall properly, when I originally installed/licensed VM, the installation required dotnet 35 and not the msi method.

Hi Brian,

The ICE3 will not show up in the Arduino Ide it doesn't support it. We use the atmel studio atprogram.exe instead of avrdude.exe for the ICE3.

Did you manage to get your visual micro version number as stated previously? If so please also let me know what the assembly location is which is displayed below the version number.

Thanks

Re ICE3. Yes, I figured you did something different from the arduino IDE to get the ICE3 working- that's why I was interested in the newest version.
I am not sure what your reference to the VM version number relates to in this thread. I mentioned that I thought I saw that the latest version supported ICE3, but don't see where you asked me what version I was running.
Actually I don't know how to display this- it doesn't show up any of the normal places I would look.

Thanks- seeing your answer I  now remember doing this for you during my initial VM installation. -but today I was navigating down into Tools/visual Micro- not tools/options.
result:
C:\Program Files\Visual Micro\Visual Micro for Arduino\Visual.Micro.AS6.dll
1.1407.10
I have 2 VM licenses and VM on 2 computers but a month or so ago, my other computer suddenly failed to load either Studio 6.1 or 6.2, both of which were on it. I tried everything, even calling up a Windows restore point back before Studio/VM were initially loaded. Even then, I could not re-install Studio 6.1 or .2 - I got errors in the install process. So, I can't try the newest version of VM on this other computer, which would have been a useful comparison.
Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

1)
You are using the latest version of Visual Micro. 1407.10

Do you have an programers.atmel.txt in C:\Program Files\Visual Micro\Visual Micro for Arduino\Micro Platforms\arduino15x\hardware\avr?

2)
The upgrade errors for Atmel Studio sounds like the pc needs a windows update or has suffered some issue. Sorry to hear that. Did you post the error info on atmel's support site or anywhere else where we can view it?

Thanks Tim:
1) When I downloaded the newest version, it was in the evening, and I couldn't remember if I actually ran the install or not. When I didn't see the ICE3, I assumed I had not, so tried to do the install again. Seems like this was when I encountered the errors that I reported in this thread. So, that problem seems solved.
2)Yes I do have programmers.txt in the location noted. But I am still using IDE 1.05 not 1.5, so I guess that is why I am not seeing the IDE3 (no such file in the 1.0x folder). I had upgraded to 1.5, but reverted to 1.05 when I ran into various problems with 3rd party libraries etc.
3) Yes- something got screwed up in windows- Studio stopped working at some point after I had installed a few new applications, but I expected the system restore
i ran,to a very old restore point, should have fixed it, but it didn't. I didn't report it to Atmel- I already wasted a lot of time on it, and will probably wait until I can do a clean install of windows, before re-trying.But, its a DOS partition on a MAC running Bootcamp, so its a bit of a chore.
Thanks for everything Smiley

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the info and best of luck with your mac.

You can install the zip of Arduino 1.5 into a different location than you have install 1.0. This then allows both Ide's to be configured in Visual Micro allowing easy switching and testing between the two.

The early 1.5 Ide did not support old style 1.0.x libraries but recent versions do so maybe it's worth trying again with 1.5.

I know there are a few minor core changes to 1.5 so your 1.0 libs might still fail but it is worth a try.
