Bad news, after total uninstall and reinstall of both AS and VM still getting same error. ( system cannot find the file specified  exception 80070002 ) Cannot build a sample ASF project on Due.

Please confirm this is unrelated to a visual micro project?

Just a standard Atmel ASF project that will not build?

Thanks

Good question ,
I was always under the impression that to use / compile Arduino project in AS I use VisualMicro as a "overlay" to Arduino IDE , hence I cannot run VisualMicro "directly" to compile Arduino.
Perhaps some simple explanation on how AS,  VisualMicro and Arduino IDE are cooperating is long overdue.

And at this point I do not want to know how "Visual Studio" alone plays in this schema.

Perhaps I could "install" some way older version of VisualMicro ( year or so ) since I know it used to work.

Addendum

I just tried to build File-> New -> Arduino project and after what seems an eternity Visual Micro give me an error  "Unable to create Arduino project for ATmel  Studio."

I am missing something very basic, but what?

Hi,

Visual Micro uses the intellisense of Atmel Studio but that's it.

Everything else is managed by Visual Micro to be compatible with the Arduino build system which does not use ASF.

Visual Micro is a re-write of the Arduino Ide with Visual Studio integration. Atmel Studio is Visual Studio with a different intellisense engine.

Visual micro does allow advanced users to also take advantage of the atmel device programming options but other than that ASF and the atmel studio toolchains are unused.

Visual Micro allows you to extend your arduino projects in small ways such as adding additional compile include paths and switches

Atmel studio does not compile Arduino projects directly, Visual Micro always takes over and does what the arduino ide does.

The only change you should find between the current visual micro and the past is the atmel studio ide and the arduino ide that you have installed. The above has not changed and has always been the case.

Unless you have a .ino file in your project with the same name as the project and the containing folder then Visual Micro will go to sleep and not be apart of the project.

If you have a project with an .ino of the same name in the project folder and both are contained in a folder of the same name then Visual Micro will take over intellisense, project properties, build, upload.

Visual Micro is using (riding on the back of) the C++ or Visual AssistX intellisense and project management provided by the Ide's. Therefore it doesn't matter which Ide you use.

Hope this helps.

ps: I have no idea if this will help but the latest AS7 beta includes an Arduino converter tool. maybe you need to dump Visual Micro and Arduino and go 100% AS7 but we aware the tell me the final release might be based on VS2015, the current beta is vs2013. That might be a problem for you if you are still using windows XP. I am not sure.

Tim, thanks for the note.
I'll will comment on this later, pressed for time.

Is it possible that I need to download Arduino IDE within AS ?
Option - configure IDE location ?
I am currently using 1.6.6 when I run Arduino IDE, but told AS to use my 1.6.5. directory.

I am reluctant to do "clean install " of Arduino 1.6.5 since it messes up with my "printf" modification and other stuff.

So - what do you think? Should I risk it and go for clean install of 1.6.5 in AS anyway ?

I am sorry I don't really understand

Here are the instructions of how to configure visual micro.

http://www.visualmicro.com/page/User-Guide.aspx?doc=index

I only support release versions of Arduino but they should all work. I think the error you see if unrelated to arduino. In any case you can use the arduino zips to install as many versions as you like. You can point visual micro to any at any time so you can test without reinstalling anything

Ok, I promised to give you some latest details.
I'll try to keep it short.
My AS (6.2.1563 sp2 ) works on my old SONY PC but it still crashes the OS when I enable and USE Visual Assist.
Same AS release works ( on external USB drive) on another PC, absolutely no problems.
My conclusion - supported by at least 5 or 6 clear installs of the latest AS version is - it is broken.
I told ATmel same story and "they are looking into it".
I have a feeling  they will come up with same lame excuse as they did before - "XP is no longer supported by MS".

I really think it is bunch of bunk when working software goes nuts when "new and vastly improved " OS is introduced. I do not expect everything to be "evergreen technology" ( phrase used to be used by Nortel ) but this is a bad situation and NOBODY cares. Just because such software is free!

Thanks for the update but sorry to hear you have problems with atmel and visual assist.

I do not think they are ignoring you. I think the problem is that no one else has the problem and they can't reproduce and see crash address or /log etc.
