Before logging an issue, please update to the latest release of Visual Micro from the Downloads Page.

When Logging a Support Issue in the Forum, please ensure you have also:-

  • Enabled vMicro > Compiler > Show Build Properties
  • Re-Compile your program with these settings enabled
  		Save the new Output to a Text File and....
  • Click the Reply button and attach as .txt file OR
  • Click here to Email us with the file attached, and a link to your post

Visual Studio 2022/2026 locked during build

Hello, using VM over years now and optimized build times and other things. I am quite happy with all. 
But I never got solved the complete freeze of Visual Studio when I start to build a project.

As I saw VS2026 available I decided to try a fresh install hopefully to get rid of this freezes. But, no! A brand new install of VS2026 and VM-Trial shows exakt the same freeze. 
Unfortunately VM-2026 probably grabbed all the settings of VM in my VS2022 inst.

I tried often to fix the issue trying to tweak some settings like ParalellBuild in VM settings or some performance settings in VS. Didn't find a way not to freeze @build. 
Attached ist the build log from a non clear build which took just some seconds. 
A clean build took 217 secs(!) and most of the time VS was freezed. The windows taskmanager didn't show any overload on my AMD ryzen 3900X 12-core or at the 32gig RAM.

Would be great to get some help.

Hi, you are right. The log file doesn't actually show a problem other than the time that particular toolchain/library combo took to build. The report related to the IDE features being locked during build. We will be releasing an update during the next week or so that allows the IDE to be used during the build process.

That surprises me. I didn't suspect a bug in VM since I haven't come across any other reports regarding the IDE locking up during builds. I actually assumed it was a configuration error on my end. Is my specific toolchain/library combination that unusual?

It has been reported in the past, however it can be made more apparent with some configurations and toolchains.

If the logging is verbose, with Parallel builds enabled, and a board package with a large core e.g. ESP32 v2+, then it becomes more apparent, especially as the project grows with more libraries etc. 

We will update when the fix is available, we are working through the testing currently...

Can you try the latest release (25.1009.2) which is available from the top of the below board:

This should resolve the UI responsiveness issues while a build is happening.

Hi,

Excellent result—no freezes on VS2022 and VS2026 anymore!

The initial build times didn't change, but activating parallel build sped up a clean build from 207s to 130s (DeepLibSearch=false). Great work! Thank you!

Thanks for the feedback, and glad its improved.

Once your project has settled, the Deep Search options can be potentially altered to further improve the build time.   

The Build Speed Analysis will run a full build, and show the optimal settings for your project at the end of the build:

There are further fixes to the Debugging Features (Serial and Hardware) in vMicro in the latest release (25.1009.3) as part of the UI responsiveness improvements, which can be downloaded from the top of the below board:
