Strang behavior IDE locations

I just installing arduino IDE 2.3.10 and the lastest visual micro.

In optional arduino IDE location I get a non exisiting default locatoin that can not be changed.

The right location in my opinion is C:\Users\User1\AppData\Local\Programs\Arduino IDE

Or should I install this one instead?

Seems that the installed VMicro is not found in the extension manager. Or is it because the trail has ended?

That's actually okay. A recent redesign of that dialog has incorrectly exposed the ide path which should be hidden. It's ignored for Arduino 2.

It's only the Arduino 1x that came with avr and some libraries, therefore an ide location is/was needed.

For Arduino 2, all the means is for visual micro to look for it's json and config files that might override things like sketchbook location. But you have overridden that in Visual Micro, therefore Visual Micro wins.

The reason why the published extension says not installed is simply that the version in the gallery is slightly older than the LATEST in the forum. The LATEST will shortly be published to the gallery but it's always held for a week or so before being published.

Ok. Could that be the reason that   "arduino_event_t" is not reconized in a library file (*.h)... even after importing #include <Arduino.h> within a ESP32 dev Module?

doubt it. the arduino ide 2 has nothing to do with your builds. you have set your own sketchbook folder. Libraries are installed into [sketchbook]/libraries

any many of these things are relative to the board core. The arduino.h include is always importd.

provide info request in yellow at the top of the page or enable the MCP toolbar button and use Copilot. add the visual micro compiler resource to copilot. see the visual micro documentation for more info.

I looked in to the options to see what I could find. Only thing I found was that...

Arduino IDE folder in "vmicro Toolbar" and "VS2022 options" are not the same (see picture). I changed that to arduino 2 and intellicense recognized the code.

Did some test changing one or the other, and it seems that only the toolbar doesn't change the other (vs2022 option).

That's right. the tool bar and vMicro menu show which ide and board is selected for the current project.

The IDE Locations dialog is unrelated to any specific project or build. It simply allows one or more IDE's to be registered along with their respective locations/cores etc. (Leaving options empty is usually the best because it means the defaults are used. Arduino 1x is the only one that needs an IDE path to be set manually)

Make sense?

Still some functions in program language C like esp_wifi_get_protocol  that comes out of #include "WiFiGeneric.h" from the ESP32 arduino core files are not found in a library file

https://github.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/blob/b69d9d303ca990026a03a4cc0bd78fd5...

function

esp_err_t err2 = esp_wifi_get_protocol(WIFI_IF_STA, (uint8_t*)&protocol_bitmap);

OR

err = esp_wifi_set_bandwidth(WIFI_IF_STA, wifi_bandwidth);//only in ap mode

it's important to say if this is intellisense and/or compilation issue.

when I build it without intellisence I still get this

esp32-WiFi.h: In function void getProtocol()
esp32-WiFi.h: 165:22: error: 'esp_wifi_get_protocol' was not declared in this scope
   165 |     esp_err_t err2 = esp_wifi_get_protocol(WIFI_IF_STA, (uint8_t*)&protocol_bitmap)
   |                      ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
esp32-WiFi.h: 170:9: error: 'getprotocol' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'getProtocol'?
   170 |     if (getprotocol & WIFI_PROTOCOL_11N) {
   |         ^~~~~~~~~~~
   |         getProtocol
esp32-WiFi.h: 178:9: error: 'getprotocol' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'getProtocol'?
   178 |     if (getprotocol & WIFI_PROTOCOL_11G) {
   |         ^~~~~~~~~~~
   |         getProtocol
esp32-WiFi.h: 181:9: error: 'getprotocol' was not declared in this scope; did you mean 'getProtocol'?
   181 |     if (getprotocol & WIFI_PROTOCOL_11B) {
   |         ^~~~~~~~~~~
   |         getProtocol

Is this an answer to your question?

Take this function for example in custom library file

#if CONFIG_ESP_HOSTED_ENABLED
#error "WiFiProv is only supported in SoCs with native Wi-Fi support"
#endif

#include <WiFiProv.h>
#include <WiFi.h>
#include "WiFiGeneric.h"

// #define USE_SOFT_AP // Uncomment if you want to enforce using the Soft AP method instead of BLE
const char* pop = "abcd1234";           // Proof of possession - otherwise called a PIN - string provided by the device, entered by the user in the phone app
const char* service_name = "PROV_123";  // Name of your device (the Espressif apps expects by default device name starting with "Prov_")
const char* service_key = NULL;         // Password used for SofAP method (NULL = no password needed)
bool reset_provisioned = true;          // When true the library will automatically delete previously provisioned data.

void getProtocol() {
    esp_err_t err;
    //uint8_t getprotocol;
    //err = esp_wifi_get_protocol(WIFI_IF_STA, &getprotocol);
    uint16_t protocol_bitmap = 0;
    esp_err_t err2 = esp_wifi_get_protocol(WIFI_IF_STA, (uint8_t*)&protocol_bitmap);
    if (err != ESP_OK) {
        Serial.println("Could not get protocol!");
        //log_e("Could not get protocol! %d", err);
    }
    if (getprotocol & WIFI_PROTOCOL_11N) {
        Serial.println("WiFi_Protocol_11n");
    }
    else
    {
        Serial.println("try to set WiFi_Protocol_11n");
        setProtocol();
    }
    if (getprotocol & WIFI_PROTOCOL_11G) {
        Serial.println("WiFi_Protocol_11g");
    }
    if (getprotocol & WIFI_PROTOCOL_11B) {
        Serial.println("WiFi_Protocol_11b");
    }
}

My mistake. It's that esp_wifi_get_protocol is not a fucntion anymore and now under _wifi_is_lr_enabled. It has been a long time I code an esp32 and a lot of wifi changes have been push. Sorry.

What about the vmicro IDE config in the toolbar that doesn't override the vmicro vs2022 option?

What's shown in tools options is usually the last board physically selected from the toolbar/vmicro menu. It's used for new projects.

The toolbar and vMicro menu allow you to set the board for a project. that is then saved to the project. so with multiple projects open in a solution they can each have their own board selection.

I think that's where my crash has started.

As you are telling the vs2022 application option of selecting the right IDE should be master from vsmicro bar (project).

What disturbed me the most was that the switched.

changing the Vs2022 option, inverted the vmicro bar option. And it dit that in the other way too.

Note that I was not working with multiple vs2022 procect at the same time.

After the vs2022 crashed I repaired the installation and now it stands on IDE 2.0 by default and it seems less buggy then before. But still got issues with libraries, but that's for an other topic.

Opening copilot was just the drop.

https://www.visualmicro.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1792312065/6#5

As I was telling there

I was using copilot github chat and on one action Vs crashed and  the toolbare and projecttemplates are gone. Vmicro doesn't launch anymore.

In the extension manager it seems to be not installed and when trying to install Vmicro, it says that it is installed. What to do next?

Steps to reproduce
---------------------
Add a library
remove the library
Add a module
first use copilot github
mark code a use copilot chat
the add the library again

I restored the installation by doing

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Visual Studio → Advanced options en klik Repair.

So, it was github and the strange bahavior of the IDE location
